The Story of “Falcons Security”
The legend of Falcons Security begun when Sean suggested – in December 2001 – that it would be a great idea for him, Nick, and Kerry to go down to Salt Lake City in February for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
Sean was very convincing. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. When will the Winter Olympics ever be held this close to us?” [Ironically, Vancouver would be named to host the 2010 Games seventeen months after Sean’s declaration]
The 2002 Games were a time to remember. The three boys were repeatedly mistaken for legitimate athletes because they were wearing Team Canada jerseys. By the second day their response to the question “What sport do you participate in?” changed from a humble “Oh, we’re not athletes”, to “we’re Canada’s Downhill Tobogganing Team!”
By the end of the Salt Lake games, we were hooked – and a pact was made to visit all future winter Olympics. We just needed a name…
The Name
One evening during the 2006 Torino Olympics, the four of us were lounging around in Canada House, chatting with family members of the Canadian curling teams. The women had won the bronze, and the men had just won the gold medal the evening before, so a special party for the curlers was about to take place at BC House, a few blocks away. One of the curler’s mom looked at us in our 1920 Winnipeg Falcons jerseys, and asked us if could escort the ladies over to BC House through the streets of downtown Torino. We took on the task, partied the night away with the victorious curlers, and forever became “Falcons Security”.
